Until recent times all Indian pottery has been earthenware, including terracotta. Studio pottery is a much later edition to Indian culture. It is pottery made mostly by professional artists or artisans working alone or in small groups, making unique items or short runs. Typically, all stages of manufacture are carried out by the artists themselves, so each piece is unique.
Studio pottery in India was started by Rabindranath Tagore in Shantiniketan, India. It further branched out into two styles which developed in Delhi under Gurcharan Singh and Pondicherry under Ray Meeker's Golden Bridge pottery.
